ABOUT VIUCEDD

PRINCIPLES:

Families are supported in their role as caregivers and experts regarding their child.
Community services and supports are flexible, available and accessible.
People have the right to be involved in the design and monitoring of services and programs they use.
The competencies and contributions of people with disabilities are recognized and supported.
Communities are enhanced by the full participation of individuals with disabilities in all areas.
Competent and caring professionals make a difference.
 

GOALS

To demonstrate exemplary approaches in clinical, educational and community settings.
To provide technical assistance to community and educational entities.
To disseminate information related to the implementation of evidence based practices.
To ensure participation of persons with disabilities and their families in the design and implementation of all VIUCEDD activities.
To collaborate and coordinate activities for families with children with disabilities that promote their independence, self advocacy and integration into the community.
To provide training on the laws that protects the rights of persons with disabilities and their families.
To provide training to schools regarding the school wide issues on positive behavior supports and inclusive practices.

 

Our Philosophy

The VIUCEDD mission is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families and to provide them with tools necessary for a productive and inclusive community life.

Our History

The Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) was established in October 1994 and is funded by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Developmental Disabilities and the United States Department of Education, Office of National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.
